Shows: The Walking Dead

The most successful horror series on television returns for season three in October of 2012.

The television phenomena The Walking Dead is a survival-horror drama set in a George Romero movie. Only this show is a weekly TV series that features seasoned, talented actors and impressive effects and make-up. The show was originally brought to the small screen in 2010 by Frank Darabont, director of The Shawshank Redemption (1994) and The Mist (2007), and based on the on-going hit comic series by Robert Kirkman. The Walking Dead's popular ratings have been practically unimaginable for a horror series prior to 2012.

According to Nielsen, the ratings board organization that monitors and announces televised programming's audience numbers, 9 million people viewed the season two season finale - which are American Idol or play-off series numbers. For a show that features years of material from underground/cult classics from Night Of The Living Dead (1968) to Return Of The Living Dead (1990) to Silent Hill (video game 1999) - this reflects a new-found, huge audience for well-made survival horror.

Season Three of The Walking Dead returns to cable television channel AMC on October 31st 2012.
