Slash-Mess Day Five: Warm Bodies (2013)

Rockers L7 predicted the zombie apocalypse and zombie parodies. I snack you not.

Rob Corddry and John Malkovitch co-star in Warm Bodies (2013) an excellent, original zombie parody due in theaters in February of 2013. This flick comes from an adaptation of Isaac Marion's novel of the same name, Warm Bodies. The book and movie both feature the central character "R" (as in "Arrrrr!") a self-aware zombie who falls in love with a human girl.

"R" played by Nicholas Hoult who played Beast in X-Men First Class (2011) and is also cast as Beast in the next X-Men movie, Days of Future Past due out in 2014, stars as the self-aware and conflicted zombie. Breaking with traditional lore "R"'s love for human woman may be the "cure" for zombies worldwide and not just a hunger pang. Love conquers all and that rot?

Nevertheless, Warm Bodies tears into the cheesy, incredibly bad genre of supernatural romances aimed at 'tweens, tools and spinsters such as the awful Twilight series and spoofs love, life, and eating brains.

This horror movie parody genre is an extremely exploitable genre with not enough notable entries. Shaun Of The Dead (2004) and The Bare Wench Project (1999) being the most popular and original takes on this all too serious genre.

Flicks: Juan Of The Dead (2011)

First, there was the classic Shaun Of The Dead (2004) and now... Juan Of The Dead (2012)!

All red-blooded hum-mons enjoy the Zombie Apocalypse. It's a theoretical time of great clarity for the troubled, confused hu-mon brain. While the survival-horror has unintentionally produced some excellent parodies in it's wake, few measure up to Juan Of The Dead (2012) a Spanish made independent movie filmed in Havana, Cuba. This out-standing picture was directed by Argentinian Alejandro Brugués and is as good if not better than Shaun Of The Dead (2004).

This blackly comic indie satire comments on the past 50 years of Cuban and American history while throwing in hordes of zombies and one disenchanted and oddly unkillable hero, Juan. Brugués delivered this Spanish language production for just $3 million (most movies are made for $20 million) - just enough for some incredible art direction by native Cuban Derubín Jácome and cinematography by Carles Gusi.

Flicks: Cannibal Women (1989)

The Heart of Darkness in bikinis? I only have one thing to say ... GREENLIGHT!

Perennial softcore actress Shannon Tweed known for her work in the dicey "erotic thriller" genre and tv comedian Bill Maher star in this Romancing The Stone parody with some pretty pointy teeth. Bill Maher, today, is a well known political and social satirist with his hit show Real Time on HBO. Maher's shows, dating back to Politically Incorrect on ABC, have earned 26 Emmy Award nominations and zero wins[0].

Adrienne Barbeau (who was still Mrs. John Carpenter in '89) makes a few cameo appearances as "Dr. Kurtz" as Maher and Tweed bumble their way through fierce tribes of Pirahna Women and deep into the Avacado Jungle of Death ... aka, the avocado groves at University of California at Riverside (UCR)!

Notes:
[0] = According to the L.A. Times Politically Incorrect and Real Time w/Bill Maher have received 26 total Emmy Nominations, including best Writing and Host, yet neither have won, in any category, as of 2011. Maher is competing with John Stewart but losing to Jay Leno.
